Isn't it religion that has brought us to the brink of destruction as a species?

The majority of humans on this planet have been so concerned with an afterlife that supposedly begins with "the end days". Have we religiously preconditioned ourselves to believe the nonsense to the point where it may actually become reality? Have we failed our children and our future out of our neglect of reality, when fantasy has forced us into a predisposed Armageddon?!
