Yes, it sounds like bipolar behavior, and the hard part will be if he tries equally hard to return to you at some later point. You have every right to be angry, and you do yourself harm by staying with him. He desperately needs therapy and perhaps medication to deal with his destructive mood swings. He had no right to treat you the way he did. Mental illness is not an excuse for cruelty. You an do better than him.
