Is this really stealing??????

at school for lunch i went go a grocery store and went to buy candy. i put jolly ranchers in a bag and added some recess pieces. jolly rancher are more expensive so i typed in the code at a pay your self cashier. a lady working there told me you cant do this and almost called the store manager and store security to come. she took the bag of candy and let me go. she did not ask me for my name and information so i think im safe. but was that stealing?
