Is it essential to add ornaments to a new fish tank as i have heard many differing opinions?

I just bought a new tank yesterday as i am keen to start keeping fish as a hobby. I have read many articles and spoke to a few people who have differing opinions as to wether ornaments are essential. i have gravel and live plants in my tank so do i need the ornaments?
